Our daughter, Brittany, has always exhibited a natural, God given, talent in many of the arts. For quite awhile now her paintings when she was 13 have been on this site and now that she is 16 I think it's about time for an update. Her latest passion has been for drawing. Just as when my wife and I were growing up, she too draws the things she is "into" at the time. She has a love of movies that have historical significance. These drawings are all done with graphite pencil on bond 8 1/2" x 11" paper. She sets her computer in front of her and draws what she sees off the screen. I am amazed at what an incredibly accurate eye she has. All of these drawings are done freehand. My drawings were not this good when I was 16.

Last summer she took a one-day class with Tim Gula, a really great comic book artist. I wanted her to see the possibilites that pen and ink have. In that class, Tim told everyone to make up a creature and ink it on the spot. This is what she came up with.

Brittany gave me this drawing for Christmas. She was looking at the cover of Richard Schmid's new landscape book.

The next few drawings are all part of a series Brittany is doing. The day we showed her the movie, Empire of the Sun, it changed her life. It inspired her to draw more drawings than anything else I have ever seen. Using photos she finds on the internet as well as just pausing the movie on the screen, she meticulously freehands the beautiful little drawings from this movie. She is getting really great practice for a possible career as a storyboard artist, perhaps. I like that she is learning to get an environment suggested in these sketches as well.

If you have never seen this movie you should do yourself a favor and rent it. Steven Spielberg directed it in 1987.
